5 Ways to Use Dryer Sheets (Other than laundry!)

    by Bill Welles

Dryer sheets are great for softening your clothes, reducing static in the dryer, and of course giving your clothes an infusion of wonderful scent. However, through trial, error, and at times, desperation, dryer sheets have become useful for so much more than just your clothes!

We’ve picked our 5 favorite ways that you can use dryer sheets other than in the laundry. Try them out and see how they work for you!

Tame the Odor of Stinky Shoes

Tennis shoes, sandals, and even flip flops can all be freshened up with new dryer sheets! For closed shoes, just tuck an unused dryer sheet down into each shoe and leave it overnight. If you need to remove smells from sandals, flip flops, or other open shoes, wrap the dryer sheet around the part of the shoe that touches your foot and tuck it underneath the bottom. Leave it overnight, and voila—better smelling shoes!

    Remove Static from Your Hair

Everyone has those days when flyaway hair ruins their good looks. Using an unused dryer sheet, rub over the top of your head and force the flyaway hair to fall on the proper side of your head. If you’re having static trouble throughout all your hair, rub the sheet through your hair almost like you’re drying it after a shower. If you prefer the smell of your perfume or shampoo to that of your dryer sheets, use unscented ones.

Clean Up Pet Hair on Clothing

Dryer sheets are a great alternative to a lint roller when it comes to pet hair. If your dog, cat, or other furry friend tends to leave you covered in their colors, grab a dryer sheet and rub it over your clothing. You can also use dryer sheets on your floor or furniture.

    Dust Your House

It’s amazing just how much dust collects in your home, isn’t it? You can use a dryer sheet to clean it up!  Wipe it over the dusty areas just like you would a dust rag or feather duster. From furniture to shelves, ceiling fan blades to blinds, any area that attracts dust can be cleaned with a dryer sheet. You can even use a used dryer sheet on your electronics –just be sure that it’s good and dry before you do so!

Make Closed and Open Spaces Smell Better

Gym bags, drawers, and even your house in general can be improved with a well-placed new dryer sheet!  Closed spaces are easy—simply set the dryer sheet flat on the bottom of the space you’re refreshing and shut it. Just replace the sheet when the scent dissipates, and you can keep any space smelling fresh! (This even works when dryer sheets are placed in the bottom of your trash can - just be sure to put it in before the trash bag.) To freshen up your house without expensive air sprays or candles, tape a dryer sheet over your air vents or on the back of standalone fans.
